Concast provided a Precast frame solution for this award winning 10,000 sqm centre-piece building for the National University of Ireland’s (NUI) Maynooth Campus in Kildare. The building’s three storey design centres around the repetition of a Precast coffered flooring slab unit measuring 1.6m by 6.2m, each weighing approximately 6T. High quality bespoke steel moulds were manufactured by Concast to ensure a high quality finish for the coffered units which incorporated halving joint steps along with service opes for lighting units, fire detection sensors and audio. The overall Precast frame comprised a regular beam and column layout with a double height central atrium. The access core walls at both ends of the building were constructed with in-situ concrete incorporating Precast stairs and landings. A high quality finish was required by award winning architects Scott Tallon Walker, with all exposed Precast given only a spray paint finish. Dummy joints and shadow gaps were required throughout the Precast structure to maintain the symmetry of the connections between beams, columns and coffered flooring units. Concast also provided TY bridge beams for a new pedestrian river bridge adjoining the new building. The NUI Maynooth Library was awarded the “Innovation Award” at the Association of Consulting Engineers of Ireland (ACEI) Awards. Concast have worked with Walls Construction on other high profile projects including Ireland’s largest indoor arena at the 3 Arena in Dublin Docklands.
